When the Shop Moves, Closes or Sells: What Happens to the in270 Window Cling

An in270 window cling belongs to the shop that put it up: peel it and request a new one when you move inside the loop, peel or leave it when you close, and a local independent buyer can keep it free. Chains that inherit one should email first.

The cling belongs to the shop that put it up. If you move, peel it and request a new one for the new window on the site. We bring it by. If you close, peel it or leave it, your call. If you sell, the new owner can keep it as long as they are a local independent business inside 270, because the license covers them free, same as it covered you. If the new owner is a chain, email us before anyone guesses.

That is the whole answer. The rest is detail.

Who owns an in270 window cling

The shop does. We bring it by, you put it in a street-facing window, and from then on it is part of your storefront the same way the hours decal and the bell over the door are. We do not come back for it. We do not track it.

What you own is the vinyl. What nobody owns outright is the shape on it. The mark is the real I-270 loop traced from OpenStreetMap under the Open Database License, with 70, 71, 670 and 315 inside it. The east bulge toward the airport, the flat north side, the Grove City hook: all on the map, none of it drawn by a designer. So the cling is yours. The road is everyone's.

If you are not sure your shop qualified in the first place, who actually qualifies for the free window cling covers it.

What to do with the cling if your shop moves

Late October is when a lot of leases turn over. The orange barrels are coming down around the loop, and shop owners are deciding whether to move before the holidays and the first round of winter salt. If you are one of them, here is the order of operations.

Moving inside the loop

Peel the old one. Request a new one for the new address. We bring it by, same as the first time.

We have not published removal steps or adhesive specs, and we are not going to invent them here. Peel it the way you would peel anything off glass you care about. If it fights you, it fights you.

A shop moving from a strip off the Sawmill backup to a storefront near the Easton weave gets the same loop in the new window. Not a similar one. The same one.

Moving outside the loop

The free cling is for shops inside 270. Once you are past the outerbelt, the free tier no longer fits, so do not request a new one for the new address. Take the old one down. Or keep it in a drawer as a souvenir of the old exit. We are not checking drawers.

What happens to the cling if the shop closes

You can peel it or leave it. Both are fine.

If you leave it, here is what the neighborhood sees: an empty storefront, paper on half the glass, and the loop still in the window, the east bulge and the Grove City hook catching afternoon light. It reads a little like an orphaned parking sign. Nobody remembers who put it there. It is still telling you exactly where you are.

Residents ask us about these. A leftover cling in an empty window is not an endorsement of the next tenant and not a claim that the old shop is still open. It is a piece of vinyl that outlived its lease. Sometimes the window outlives the store.

Can a new owner keep the in270 cling

Usually, yes.

If you bought a shop and the loop came with the glass, it is yours to keep under the same terms the last owner had. The license is short enough to apply to a window in one breath:

  • Personal use is free.
  • Local independent businesses and community groups inside 270 are free, including fundraiser merch.
  • Selling products with the mark needs a license by email.
  • The geometry may never be altered.

A local independent shop that bought another local independent shop changes nothing. Same window, same terms. You do not need to ask, though we like hearing about it.

The chain store gray area

Here is the case worth naming plainly. A regional or national chain buys the building, guts the interior, and leaves the cling up because nobody got around to the windows.

The free tier is for local independent businesses. A chain is not one. We are not going to write a rule for every version of this in a blog post, and you should not guess either. Email us. If you are the chain, email us. If you are the former owner wondering whether you should have peeled it on the way out, email us. It is a short conversation.

What never changes when the shop does

The glass changes. The owner changes. The sign over the door changes. The mark does not.

The kit, the site and the license all forbid smoothing, symmetrizing or reprojecting it. Recolor and scale, that is it. So the cling in the old window off Sawmill and the one in the new window near Easton trace the same road, bend for bend. Nobody rounded off the bulge for the new location. Nobody ever will.

That consistency is the point. The loop is not a circle, it is a road, and why the loop isn't a circle explains what it was routed around. If you are swapping the cling for something printed in-house at the new place, check which in270 mark fits your place first. Broad and High or the Confluence may suit a narrow window better.

It is not the official symbol of Columbus, and it never claims to be. It is the one people chose, one window at a time. When a shop moves and the loop goes up again a few exits over, that is one more person choosing it twice.

Getting a fresh cling for the new window

If you are moving inside the loop, or you just opened in a space and want a clean one instead of the faded hand-me-down, request a free window cling for the new address. We bring it by before the salt trucks start.

Questions people ask

Can a new business owner keep the in270 window cling?
Yes, if the new owner is a local independent business inside 270. The license covers local independents free, so the cling stays under the same terms the previous owner had. If a chain or national brand takes over the space, the free tier does not clearly apply, so email in270 before deciding whether it stays up.
What should I do with my in270 cling if my shop closes?
Peel it or leave it. Both are fine. A cling left in an empty storefront is not an endorsement of the next tenant and does not mean the old shop is still open. It is just vinyl that outlived the lease. If a new local independent business moves in, they can keep it free.
How do I get a new in270 window cling after moving?
If the new address is inside the I-270 loop, request a new cling on the in270 site and it gets brought by, the same way the first one was. Peel the old one from the old window. If you moved outside the loop, the free cling no longer applies to the new location.
